Largest Cross(es) in the Northern Hemisphere – Groom, Texas and Alto Pass, Illinois

Looks like we have a new reigning champion as to the Largest Cross in the Northern Hemisphere in Alto Pass, Illinois called the Bald Knob Cross at 198 ft.  in height.  We’re really not trying to debate here as the Cross in Groom is quoted as being 19 stories high (190 ft.).  I would just recommend if you’re near either of these places, pay it a visit and be reminded of the most important thing these crosses stand for – The death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Groom, Texas (in the pan handle) is home to the 2nd largest cross in the Northern Hemisphere. I’ve included a links for more details about the sculptures and their origin.

The official website is http://www.crossministries.net/index.htm

This scene takes my breath, words cannot express what goes through ones mind….. I am thankful to the man that went to the lengths he did to construct such a place to go and see in life size form what Jesus did for us all. Amazing! I will come to Groom and see this! JRB

    The Crucifixion statues are impressive.
I would like to know the name of the artist, the date they were made, and the exact location.

    Thanks
    God Bless

    Hi there,

The artist’s name is Mickey Wells and the year was 1995. You can learn how this awesome ministry came about and much more at: http://www.crossministries.net/Page_12.htm.
Mau God bless you as you walk in His way!

There are some interesting sites with interesting information about the Groom Cross. Sometimes, contradictory: is 1995 the year of the conception of the project of the Cross or the year of its completion?

The statues are a more recent addition, aren’t they? When have they been erected? Is it last year (“After seven years of development, The Shrine of Christ’s Passion, an interactive half-mile winding pathway of 40 life-size bronze statues depicting the Stations of the Cross, is scheduled to open in June of 2008.” http://www.grouptravelblog.com/weblog.php?id=D20080318 )?…

I can’t seem to find any exact info – and believe me, I invested some hours in research… Why don’t people on http://www.crossministries.net/ publish a chronology? There’s none on Mickey Wells’ site either as a matter of fact ( http://mickeywellsartist.com/Groom-Cross-Project )…

My Fiancee has traveled by this location many times. She has been witness to, during Easter, that actual human beings were
Crucifying? themselves? is this true? Hammers, Nails, actual Crucifixion?

I have not heard this – it would be unfortunate if so…Christ died once for ALL. Thanks for visiting Frank

    It too is inspiring.

Thanks for posting M. Janes – This post was last updated in 2009, where I indicated it was the “2nd Largest” so it does appear the cross at Bald Knob is the new reigning champion. I haven’t kept up much with other contenders though. Like anything, once you put something out there it sets the standard for others to beat. You are right too – very inspiring. Thanks for reading and God bless. Pastor RDM
